Why do I need an MRI?

An MRI scan is a great way to diagnose a disease or injury. It can even detect an illness in its early stages. This will make it much easier to begin treatment before any injury or illness gets worse. It can even help save lives if the disease is caught early enough. A doctor may order you to have an MRI if they cannot diagnose an injury or illness just from the outside of your body. Getting a better look at what’s going on from the inside of the body can help a doctor evaluate the issue. If any concerns are coming from the doctor about treatment, this scan can help determine the best treatment path.

What Are the Benefits of an Open MRI?

An MRI is a completely non-invasive scan. It is also very low-risk, MRI’s do not use radiation. If you follow our instructions, nothing about the machine itself should harm you. The most common types of MRI machines are closed MRIs and open MRIs. Here at Tesla MRI, we use open MRIs, below are benefits of using an open MRI.

Reduces claustrophobia

In closed machines, you may feel trapped or surrounded. This may lead to the patient feeling claustrophobic and uncomfortable. Here at Tesla MRI, we want you to be as comfortable as possible, which is why we have an open MRI. The open MRI is open on all four sides which eliminates the feeling of being trapped. It is also quieter than a closed MRI which adds to a more comfortable experience.

Radiation Free

An MRI does not use any radiation. It uses a large magnet, radio waves, and a complex computer system. Unlike ultrasounds or CT scans, patients who have an MRI appointment do not require much preparation by the patient beforehand. You can eat normally and go back to daily activities after the scan.

Quick Easy Results

This entire process is non-invasive. The results will be available shortly after the scan. The patients MRI will be faxed and/or mailed directly to your doctor. Usually, after 24 hours your doctor will get in contact with you and discuss the results with you.

Common Injuries an MRI Can Detect

MRI Scans use a very powerful magnet to detect water content in the body tissues. This creates an image of detailed tissues, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and the spine. For this reason, if you have a broken bone it is better to use an X-ray. If you potentially have a tear or rupture in ligaments, tendons, muscles or tissues an MRI scan will provide evidence of your injury. Below are a few common injuries that an MRI can detect:

Shoulder Injuries– The most common shoulder injuries that may need an MRI scan are Rotator Cuff Tears and Labral Tears.

Knee Injuries– Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and Meniscus tears are common knee injuries that use an MRI scan to diagnose.

Stress Fractures– Although you may think that an X-ray would be better to see stress fractures in a bone, that is wrong. MRIs are better to see small hairline or stress fractures by showing the edema (fluid) within the bone.

These are just a few common injuries that use MRI’s to diagnose but there are many more. It is best to see a doctor if you have an injury and they will tell you if you may need an MRI scan.
