Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a noninvasive medical imaging technique that creates comprehensive pictures of practically every internal structure in the human body, including organs, bones, muscles, and blood arteries. MRI scanners use a powerful magnet and radio waves to produce pictures of the body. In contrast to X-rays, an MRI test produces no ionizing radiation. The MRI machine is a big, cylindrical (tube-shaped) equipment that generates a strong magnetic field around the patient and transmits radio wave pulses via a scanner. Some MRI machines resemble small tunnels, whilst others are wider.

The MRI scanner’s powerful magnetic field forces atoms in your body to align in the same way. The MRI equipment then sends radio waves, which shift these atoms out of their original positions. As the radio waves are switched off, the atoms return to their former positions and emit radio signals. These signals are received by a computer and transformed into a picture of the bodily component under examination. This picture is displayed on a viewing monitor.

During an MRI scan, you’ll recline on a comfortable table that glides inside a cylindrical machine known as the MRI scanner. The scanner’s enormous magnet generates a strong magnetic field around your body. Radiofrequency waves are then focused to the region under investigation, causing hydrogen atoms in your body’s tissues to release signals. Special detectors in the MRI scanner take up these signals, which are then utilized to build detailed cross-sectional pictures of the area of interest.
